TREE LINES | Online creative writing workshop with Sophie Howarth | Friday 8th December, 10.00-12.30pm GMT

Some of us are fortunate enough to live near forests or woodlands – almost all of us live within walking distance of at least a few trees – but how often do we really bring our full attention to these silent but magnificent sentinels?

 This creative writing workshop is an opportunity to revel in the beauty, marvel at the diversity, and revere the capacity of trees to sink carbon, purify air, support biodiversity and stabilise the climate.

 Inspired by poetry and photography, we’ll spend our morning exploring the reciprocal relationships between humans and trees and discovering what each can reveal about the other. You can expect simple but stimulating writing prompts, and conversations about love and loss, destruction and resilience, creativity and community. There will be a chance to read poems and share a few lines of our own (although there is no obligation to do so).

 You will leave with a sense of deepened sense of connection and wonder – and a collection of original acorns which might flourish as future writing projects.

 Led by Sophie Howarth. Sophie is an artist, writer and teacher.  Her work is about deepening connection to ourselves, one another and the wider web of life, and is rooted in the belief that justice and joy go hand in hand. She is the author of several books, most recently Looking At Trees, published in October 2023.

 The event is hosted by Kate Oldfield, writer, poet, writing mentor and curator of creative communities at The Writing Well.
